Fact Sheets

Does your skin look older and a little bit more tired every time you look in the mirror? Are the effects of the sun taking their toll? Most of us, at one point or another, have thought about putting a stop to – or at least slowing down – the ageing process and its effect upon our skin. Well, now you can.

Every day, we not only have to contend with the natural ageing process, but also harsh environmental factors that impact upon our skin here in Melbourne. Until recently, most skin rejuvenation treatments involved a lengthy recovery period, unlike laser photo rejuvenation which  is a sophisticated, yet simple, aesthetic procedure.

Developed by Dr Patrick Bitter Jr, this revolutionary anti aging therapy involves a series of beams of light being pulsed onto the facial area.

Laser photo skin therapy can improve the signs of photoaging and rosacea, reducing fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, telangiectasias and irregular pigmentation – resulting in younger and more youthful skin. The benefits are consistent, with visible improvement in the skin as well as minimal discomfort and recovery time.

Photo rejuvenation is simply sophisticated beauty that is rediscovered in you.

Q & A

What is laser photo rejuvenation?

An intense light is emitted in a series of gentle pulses over the area of treatment. It is necessary to undertake a series of laser facial sessions to improve the appearance of sun damaged and ageing skin.

What areas can be treated?

Treatments can be performed on any part of the skin, but they are especially effective on the face, neck, chest and hands.

What conditions can be treated?

With laser skin rejuvenation, the Victoria Laser & Skin Clinic is able to offer effective pigmentation removal, erythema treatment, treatment for rosacea, and treatment for sunspots, redness and some birthmarks, such as port wine stains.

What are the advantages over other skin rejuvenation modalities?

There are substantial visible improvements seen in the skin, with minimal downtime compared to other methods such as laser skin resurfacing. In most cases, patients are able to return to normal activity immediately. Treatments are safe with a minimal risk of scarring or adverse effects. The whole face can be treated with a laser facial within 40 minutes for most patients.

How many photofacial treatments are needed?

Depending on the skin concern, as little as 1 to 2 sessions are required, but for some conditions, 4 to 6 treatments are recommended. A follow up treatment in 2 or more years may be required for some conditions.

Does it hurt?

Most people describe the laser skin rejuvenation treatment as feeling like an elastic band flicking on the skin. After the laser facial treatment, the area may feel like sunburn for several hours. Patients do have the option of having a topical anaesthetic applied to the area before treatment to help eliminate any discomfort.

Are there any side effects?

Most side effects are mild and of short duration. There may be slight redness and/or crusting immediately following treatment, lasting less than 24 hours in most people. On rare occasions, it may last up to several days.

Laser Hair Removal Pre-Treatment Care

Pre/Post Care

Pre-Treatment Care

All patients of laser photo rejuvenation in our Melbourne clinics must have a consultation prior to the procedure. They must complete a general medical questionnaire on the nature of their skin and their anti aging needs. At the time of the first consultation, patients will be tested to properly evaluate the correct settings for their skin condition and skin type. These parameters will then be stored in a database and in the patient’s chart for future reference.

Post-Treatment Care

If needed, apply ice to the face after laser facial treatment, and wash with a gentle cleanser using cool water. Afterwards, apply moisturiser and avoid the sun as much as you can. If you do venture out into the sun, make sure you wear a hat and apply sunblock with an SPF of 30+ on an hourly basis.

When following the treatment guidelines, patients at our laser skin clinics experience consistent visible improvement to their complexions which, to date, has proved to be long-lasting. Laser anti aging treatments have great appeal because of the dramatic visual improvement to the skin, the simple nature of the treatment and, most importantly, the complete absence of recovery time. Patients are able to return immediately to normal activity, unlike other treatments that require downtime such as laser skin resurfacing.

The following symptoms can be treated effectively using laser photo treatment:

By using laser skin rejuvenation as a form of erythema treatment, patients can expect an average of 50 to 75% reduction after five treatments – especially in the face, neck or chest. Benefits have also continued for up to twelve months following treatments.

Until recently, there has been no effective treatment for facial, neck or chest flushing. Laser facial and photo rejuvenation treatments are extremely effective in reducing the degree of flushing in all patients treated. Most patients report a 75% (or greater) reduction in flushing.

Patients with active inflammatory rosacea generally experience a considerable improvement in their symptoms after undergoing laser treatment for rosacea (after several treatments). Most patients are able to decrease or discontinue treatments for rosacea. Although symptoms may re-occur following treatment, most patients report 60% (or greater) improvement in their rosacea.

Photoaging and sun damage:

Skin that displays fine wrinkling, freckling or irregular pigmentation from chronic sun exposure is visibly improved after a series of anti aging laser skin treatments at our clinics. Fine wrinkles of the face have shown an average improvement of 15 to 25% (or greater) after five laser facial sessions.

Pigmentation problems:

These include brown age spots or melasma and coarse or rough skin with large pores. Patients with this skin type generally experience smoother, softer skin with a visible reduction in pore size (an average improvement of 50% or greater) after treatments.

Non-facial sun damage:

The chest, dorsal, hand, forearm and leg can all be safely rejuvenated using this procedure.

Acne scarring:

Laser facial treatments are effective in reducing the erythema and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation of acne scarring.

Laser photo treatments offer several advantages over other skin rejuvenation and anti aging modalities such as chemical peeling and laser skin resurfacing. These advantages include:

      • Only truly effective treatment for facial, neck and chest erythema, telangiectasias and flushing.
      • Substantial visible improvements seen in the skin, with no downtime.
      • Laser treatments are safe, with a minimal risk of scarring or adverse effects.
      • Quick and easy for patients and, generally speaking, no anaesthesia is required. A laser facial can be performed for most patients within 15-20 minutes.
      • Millions of Australians with skin changes of rosacea and/or photoaging can benefit immensely from these treatments.
      • The energy delivered is in the form of pulses of light. The wavelength of the laser is within the visible spectrum of light, so there is minimal risk of ocular injury and a higher level of patient safety.

Photo rejuvenation treatments can be safely used on non-facial skin. This allows us to provide effective neck and chest erythema treatment as well as photoaging of the neck, chest, forearms, shoulders and legs.
