Skinstitut Peels

Chemical peels are topical agents that produce a superficial and precise ablation of the skin. A controlled destruction of the outer skin layers (epidermis and upper dermis) is achieved, which is followed by skin repair and regeneration. Chemical peels produce a controlled wound that will result in skin renewal with the reduction or disappearance of sun damage, pigmentation, acne lesions, fine lines and wrinkles. Superficial depressed scars are softened and become less visible. The depth of ablation and results depend on the strength of agents used.

Wound Healing Process

Inflammatory 1-3+ days

An acute inflammation is induced leading to a skin repair response with mild to moderate redness, skin warmth and mild swelling. Rarely- slight weeping may occur. The repair process is triggered with production of multiple growth factors.

Proliferative 3-10+ days As the redness settles, skin dryness with flaking –peeling occurs. Growth factors induce regeneration and normalization of the epidermis, and increased production of type 3 collagen and elastin in the dermis.

Maturation 28+ days up to 1 year. Collagen remodelling continues for at least six months creating a plumper dermis and improved skin tone. Scar tissue is softened and skin smoothness is improved Type 3 collagen is gradually replaced by type 1 stronger collagen.

AHA Enzyme

Our recommendation if you have never experienced a chemical peel before or you’re new to the Skinstitut product range. It is also the peel solution for those who think their skin is too delicate for chemical exfoliation. This gentle, micro-exfoliating treatment uses Papain Enzymes to gently polish the skin without irritation. Vitamin B3 strengthens the immune defence while Chamomile, Vitamin B5, and Hyaluronic Acid helps to soothe, hydrate. Skin is left clear, bright, and hydrated while dryness, flaking, and sensitivity is no longer.

Skinstitut AHA Enzyme Peel Post Care

  • No active products for 3 to 5 days (Glycolic Cleanser, L-lactic Cleanser 4%, Glycolic Scrub, Retinol, Vitamin C, Even Blend Serum)

Peel Accelerator

This peel suits most skin types to renew, brighten, and smooth the skin. It is especially beneficial for acne and acne-related symptoms and mild pigmentation. This peel can be further intensified for sun-damaged and photoaged skins with the addition of Vitamin C. A carefully balanced AHA blend of Lactic, Glycolic, and L.Mandelic Acids helps to boost your natural luminosity while decongesting the skin. Vitamin B, and Kakadu Plum and Witch Hazel Extracts strengthens the skin’s immune defence while Canadian Willowherb is a powerful anti-inflammatory to soothe and calm. Peel Accelerator is used to degrease the skin before each peel and as a peel itself

Skinstitut Peel Accelerator pre-peel prep

The following protocol should be followed for 2 weeks prior to the Skinstitut Peel

  • Glycolic Cleanser 12% (at least once per day) or L.Lactic Cleanser 4% at therapist discretion. This will allow the skin to be able to better tolerate peel (less chance of epidermal sliding or unwanted blanching of the skin)
  • Even Blend Serum both morning and evening to be used to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation. Can be omitted if client never suffers from Post Inflammatory hyperpigmentation or is a Fitzpatrick skin type 1-2. * When treating stubborn pigmentation add a rice grain size amount of Vitamin C to the Even Blend Serum.
  • Age Defence SPF 50+ morning – this can be omitted if the client is currently using an SPF
  • Patients with history of cold sores should be encouraged to prep prior to peel and post peel with anti-herpetic medication – eg acyclovir and zovirax.

Pre & Post Treatment Care

Pre-Treatment Care

Proper pre-peel care will build up the skin’s strength, ensure cosmetic peels are even, and reduce the healing time after treatment.

Preparation for your peel begins 14 days before coming into the clinic. You will need to use a specialised cleanser, as prescribed by your dermal aesthetician, to cleanse your skin once a day. In addition, you need to use an SPF30+ sunscreen every day.

Post-Treatment Care

As each peel and its effect varies, so too will post-care treatment. While our clinicians will advise you on the specific post-care regime for your selected treatment, there is general advice that applies to all peels:

Your skin will be tender – be gentle with it.

Don’t pick, scrub, or peel the skin, as this can lead to complications. Instead, wait a few days and gently exfoliate with the product your clinician recommends.

Don’t use any scrubs, exfoliants or acne cleaners other than those recommended by your clinician. They will slow down the healing process by irritating the skin.

Continue to protect your skin after a face peel with SPF30+ sunscreen every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect during the facial peel treatment?

Initially, your skincare professional will discuss your concerns and note anything you wish to improve about your skin. This will help them determine the best types of peels for your specific skin, from chemical peels for acne through to chemical peels for dry skin. You will need to explain how you currently look after your skin so they can tailor a skincare routine and treatment to achieve your desired results. Your skin will be cleansed and assessed, followed by exfoliation, vitamin serums, massage and a mask. Extractions and other advanced electrotherapies may also be incorporated into your chemical peels treatment.

What conditions can be corrected with a treatment?

People commonly book skin peels for:

  • Acne – Chemical peels for acne can help to clear active acne and reduce pigmentation caused by acne scarring. TCA and salicylic acid face peels are among the best options for acne.
  • Sensitivity – A face peel for sensitivity can help to encourage cellular repair and improve barrier function, leaving it looking clearer and more evenly toned.
  • Oily skin – Cosmetic peels for oily skin penetrate deep into clogged pores, helping to reduce oil secretions and prevent blemishes.
  • Dry skin – Chemical peels for dry skin work by shedding dry, dead skin to reveal the younger looking skin beneath.
  • Sun damaged and prematurely aged skin – A chemical peel for sun damaged or ageing skin removes the top layer of old skin to reveal younger skin that’s smoother and less wrinkled in appearance.
  • Congested skin with blackheads and whiteheads – Chemical peels for blackheads and whiteheads can help to clear marks, reduce the size of pores and minimise scarring.
  • Combination (oily and dry) skin – A face peel for combination skin works by shedding dry skin while also reducing oil production, leaving skin perfectly balanced.
  • Dark circles and puffiness around the eyes – Cosmetic peels for eye circles and puffiness can help to reduce pigmentation and improve collagen in the skin, resulting in skin that looks fresh and youthful.

What are the advantages of a treatment?

The treatment process for our chemical peel in Melbourne will vary depending on the nearby individual’s needs and will be tailored to suit your skin by your skincare professional. Generally, a professional treatment will use a blend of products and ingredients which are stronger than most homecare products. This can boost your everyday routine and also be used to complement another skin therapy, achieving greater results from what you already do for your skin. Advanced techniques and electrotherapies may be incorporated into the facial peel to stimulate the deeper skin cells and assist the delivery of key nutrients into the skin.

How many treatments will I need?

As everyone is different, your skincare professional will work with you to plan an individual and realistic course of chemical peels treatment. You may require cosmetic peels once a week or even once every few months.

I have sensitive skin, can I have a facial?

Yes. Obviously, if you have sensitive skin, the face peel used will be gentle and calming to minimise any adverse reactions. Sensitive skin can benefit from professional facial treatments as it is often an impaired barrier function which encourages the skin to overreact to products. Barrier function can be restored with protective hydration and vitamins and minerals.
