When it comes to facial rejuvenation, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. The lines and wrinkles that appear on your face are as unique as you are, forming in different areas based on your facial expressions, lifestyle, and genetics. That’s why understanding how anti-wrinkle treatment is tailored to specific facial areas can help you make informed decisions about your aesthetic goals.
At Victorian Laser & Skin Clinic, we’ve been helping Melbourne patients smooth fine lines and wrinkles since 1999. Our AHPRA-registered clinicians specialise in creating natural, refreshed appearances by treating specific facial areas with precision and care. Whether you’re concerned about forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, or a combination of areas, here’s what you need to know about how treatment works for each region of the face.
Understanding Dynamic vs Static Lines
Before we explore specific treatment areas, it’s helpful to understand the two types of wrinkles that form on our faces.
Dynamic lines are caused by repeated facial muscle movements. Every time you smile, laugh, frown, or raise your eyebrows, your facial muscles contract and your skin folds. Over thousands of repetitions throughout your life, these temporary creases become more defined. Dynamic lines are visible when you make expressions.
Static lines are wrinkles that remain visible even when your face is relaxed. These develop when dynamic lines have been present for so long that the skin loses its ability to bounce back completely.
Anti-wrinkle injections work by relaxing the specific facial muscles responsible for creating these lines. By reducing muscle activity, the treatment prevents the constant creasing and folding that causes fine lines to form. While primarily targeting dynamic lines, the treatment also helps static lines soften over time as the skin gets a chance to recover without continuous muscle movement.
Forehead Lines: Smooth Out Horizontal Wrinkles
The Problem
Forehead lines are horizontal creases that run across your forehead, appearing every time you raise your eyebrows, express surprise, or look sceptical. These lines can span almost the entire distance from one eyebrow to the other and range from faint to quite deep, depending on your age, genetics, and how expressive you tend to be.
Many Melbourne patients tell us that forehead lines make them appear tired, worried, or older than they feel, even when they’re in a great mood. Because the forehead is such a prominent feature, these lines can significantly impact your overall appearance.
How Treatment Works
For forehead line treatment, muscle relaxants are strategically injected across the forehead to temporarily reduce the activity of the frontalis muscle (the muscle responsible for lifting your eyebrows and creating those horizontal lines).
Our clinicians take a conservative, precise approach to ensure you maintain natural movement and expression. The goal isn’t to create a “frozen” forehead but rather to soften the lines while preserving your ability to show emotion and look animated.
What to Expect
Treatment for forehead lines typically takes just a few minutes. Most patients describe minimal discomfort during the procedure, often comparing the sensation to a small pinprick. After treatment, you can immediately return to your regular activities with no downtime required.
Results begin to appear within 3-5 days, with the peak effect visible around two weeks after your appointment. Your forehead will look smoother and more relaxed, but you’ll still be able to raise your eyebrows and show expression naturally. The results typically last 3-4 months.
Frown Lines: Soften the “11” Between Your Brows
The Problem
Frown lines (also called glabellar lines or the “11” lines) are the vertical creases that form between your eyebrows. These lines develop from the repeated contraction of muscles that pull your brows together when you frown, concentrate, or squint.
Even when you’re not frowning, these lines can make you appear angry, stern, or unapproachable. Many of our patients report that people frequently ask if they’re upset, even when they’re feeling perfectly happy. These lines are among the most commonly treated areas because they can dramatically impact how others perceive your mood and personality.
How Treatment Works
Treating frown lines requires precise placement of muscle relaxants in the corrugator and procerus muscles (the muscles that pull your brows together). By temporarily relaxing these muscles, the treatment stops the frowning motion that creates these vertical lines.
This is often one of the most transformative treatment areas, as softening frown lines can significantly improve your overall facial expression, making you appear more approachable, relaxed, and well-rested.
What to Expect
Frown line treatment is quick and involves several small injections between and just above the eyebrows. The discomfort is minimal, and results develop over the same timeline as other treatment areas (3-5 days to notice changes, peak effect at two weeks).
The improvement can be quite dramatic, particularly if you’ve had deep frown lines for years. Not only will your face look softer and more approachable, but you may also notice reduced tension headaches if you habitually furrow your brow throughout the day.
Crow’s Feet: Smooth Lines Around the Eyes
The Problem
Crow’s feet are the fan-shaped lines that radiate from the outer corners of your eyes. They form when we smile, laugh, or squint, appearing as temporary creases at first. Over time, as the skin around the eyes loses elasticity due to reduced collagen and elastin production, these temporary lines become permanent.
While some people embrace crow’s feet as “smile lines,” many Melbourne patients prefer to soften them for a more refreshed, youthful appearance around the eyes. The skin around the eyes is particularly delicate and thin, which is why these lines can become quite pronounced over time.
How Treatment Works
Treating crow’s feet involves injecting muscle relaxants into the orbicularis oculi (the muscle surrounding the eye). This stops the muscle movement that creates the creasing and folding at the outer corners of the eyes.
The treatment requires a skilled, experienced hand, as the eye area is delicate and the placement of injections must be precise to achieve natural-looking results without affecting your smile or normal eye function.
What to Expect
Crow’s feet treatment typically involves 2-3 injection points on each side. The procedure is quick and generally well-tolerated. After treatment, the lines around your eyes will gradually soften, though you’ll still see natural creasing when you smile broadly (nobody wants a completely expressionless face).
The result is a softer, more refreshed appearance that makes your eyes look brighter and more open. Many patients report that this subtle change makes them look more well-rested and approachable. As with other areas, results last approximately 3-4 months.
Additional Treatment Areas
Beyond the “big three” of forehead, frown, and crow’s feet, anti-wrinkle treatment can address several other areas of the face:
Brow Lift
Muscle relaxants can be strategically placed to create a subtle lift in the eyebrows, opening up the eye area and creating a more refreshed appearance. This is particularly helpful for patients who notice their brows have started to droop slightly with age, creating a tired or heavy appearance around the eyes.
Bunny Lines
These are the horizontal lines that appear across the sides and bridge of your nose when you scrunch your nose while laughing or smiling. While these lines are often quite subtle, some patients prefer to soften them for a smoother appearance.
Gummy Smile
If you show a significant amount of your upper gum when you smile, targeted muscle relaxant injections can reduce this by relaxing the muscles that lift your upper lip excessively.
Masseter (Jawline Slimming)
While we’ve covered masseter treatment for jawline slimming and TMJ relief in depth elsewhere, it’s worth noting that this treatment pairs beautifully with facial anti-wrinkle treatments to create overall facial balance and harmony.
How Treatment Is Personalised
At Victorian Laser & Skin Clinic, every treatment is tailored to your unique facial anatomy, expression patterns, and aesthetic goals. During your complimentary consultation, your clinician will:
Carefully assess your facial structure and muscle activity
Observe how your face moves when you make different expressions
Discuss which areas concern you most
Create a customised treatment plan that addresses your specific concerns
Explain what to expect and answer all your questions
We take a conservative approach, prioritising natural results over dramatic changes. You’ll still look like yourself, just refreshed, relaxed, and more confident. Our goal is to enhance your natural beauty, not create a “done” or artificial appearance.
Combining Treatment Areas
Many patients choose to treat multiple areas during a single appointment. Combining treatment areas is not only convenient but often creates better overall results, as treating the forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet together creates a harmonious, balanced appearance.
If you’re new to anti-wrinkle treatments, we often recommend starting with your primary area of concern and then adding other areas once you’re comfortable with the process and satisfied with your initial results. Your first appointment will help you understand what to expect and plan your treatment journey.
It’s also worth noting that anti-wrinkle injections can be safely combined with other treatments such asdermal fillers, skin needling, LED light therapy, or laser treatments. These combinations often enhance your overall results and promote comprehensive skin rejuvenation.
What About Product Choice?
Victorian Laser & Skin Clinic uses two main muscle relaxant products, both containing Botulinum toxin Type-A but with different molecular sizes. One is a European product produced by Galderma, and one is an American product produced by Allergan. Your clinician will discuss which product is best suited to your needs during your consultation.
Both products work similarly and produce excellent results. The peak effect occurs around 14 days after treatment, which is when we typically schedule review appointments to assess your results and provide any necessary adjustments.
