Laser Hair Removal

If you are interested in eliminating unwanted hair, then you've come to the right place!

Let's face it, excess body and facial hair can be unsightly and embarrassing. Shaving, waxing, plucking and depilatory creams are inconvenient, messy and only temporary.

Laser hair removal is faster and safer than any other permanent hair removal method, and can treat large areas at each session.

Here at Victorian Laser & Skin Clinics we use the most advanced technology to provide safe and effective permanent hair reduction treatments customised for each individuals hair, skin colour and sensitivity.

Q & A

Is it permanent?
Yes, the results are permanent! Once a hair follicle has been successfully treated, it will never return. Studies show that more that 85% of our clients have had permanent hair removal of 80% or more.

What is the advantage of using a laser/IPL?
Laser and IPL give permanent results and allow you to treat large areas such as full legs, arms or a full back in a short period of time.

What areas can be treated?
All areas of the body except the inner ear, and areas in close proximity to the eyes can be treated safely. Common areas for hair removal treatments include the upper lip and chin, full legs, bikini, underarms, back and chest.

Am I the right candidate?
The treatment is most effective for individuals who have fair skin and dark hair. Darker skin types can also be treated, however more treatments may be required.

Does it hurt?
Most clients describe the treatment as mildly uncomfortable, not unlike "the flick of an elastic band" which is a common description used. For those who find the procedure uncomfortable, a topical anaesthetic is available.

How many treatments will I need?
Most clients undertake 4-8 treatments to achieve optimal results of permanent hair removal of 80% or greater. Therefore on average. 4-8 treatments are required.

Are there any side effects?
It is normal to experience some redness of the skin and some mild swelling which typically lasts from an hour to 24 hours. In rare instances the redness may last a few days and there could be some grazing or 'scabbing' which typically subsides over a short period of time. Most people are able to return to normal activity immediately.

Pre & Post Care

  1. Stay out of the sun for one month before your treatment, and use a sun block with protection of factor 30+ when you are exposed.
  2. Do not use self-tan or solariums for at least one month before your treatment.
The procedure may have to be postponed if you have a tan, as we cannot treat people who have tanned skin because of an increased risk of pigmentation change.
  3. Do not wax, pluck or bleach for at least one month before your treatment.
  4. For darker skinned patients, daily or twice daily application of Superfade (available from chemists) to the treatment area for one month prior treatment will minimise the chance of pigmentation change.

Post-Treatment Care

  1. Gently cleanse the treated area twice a day with a moisturising soap.
  2. In some cases redness can last longer, but is unlikely to last more than 2 days. The redness is a natural response and you need not be concerned about it. Daily application of Medisoothe will be soothing to the skin.

Until redness has completely subsided, avoid all of the following:

    • Applying make-up over the treated areas
    • Use of scented lotions or soaps, exfoliant creams (Retin-A and alpha- hydroxy), loofa sponges and aggressive scrubbing
    • Hot or cold water - wash with tepid water
    • Shaving
    • Swimming pools and spas with multiple chemicals/chlorine
    • Activities that cause excessive perspiration

  3. In the unusual case of crusting of the skin, apply a thin film of bacitracin or polysporin ointment twice a day to the affected areas. Do not pick at these areas, as this may result in infection or scarring.
  4. In the rare case of infection, a course of antibiotics is recommended. A prescription can be obtained from your local GP.
  5. In the rare case of swelling, use of a steroid cream is recommended. Once again, a prescription can be obtained from your local GP.
  6. Strictly avoid any sun exposure for at least one week after the procedure, as the treated area will be more prone to sunburn and pigmentation change. Keep the area covered and use a sunblock with a protection factor of 30+, applied hourly while you are in the sun.
